Abstract: Lake Neusiedl (German: Neusiedler See) is the only large shallow lake' in Austria. It is situated in the Pannonian region and occupies a large surface area of 321km2, with more than half of its area covered with reeds. The cordon along the reed-front is perfect for surveying the aquatic vegetation, respecting species composition and abundance. In addition, the extremely low water level over the course of the past summer may have led to a switch in macrophyte community composition and quantity. Earlier surveys were conducted during stages of normal water levels (1998/ 1999/ 2000, 2006, 2011) in the regions of Oggau-Purbach (northwest), Gols-Podersdorf (northeast) and around the large reed island in the south. These historic results can now be compared with the dry and extreme low stage conditions of the present year. Using the Kohler survey method (KOHLER et al. 1971, applied also by ICPDR, and noted as European Standard EN 14184), presence-absence data analysis and several multivariate statistics will provide insight to the macrophyte composition, regarding species occurrence and abundance. Moreover, the differences between the earlier surveys will be covered as well. The periodical monitoring of macrophyte communities enables the detection of significant alterations and may be used to predict consequences of further environmental changes on species composition in the future. Our group is very thankful for assisting us to get permission to carry out this important and timely research project.
