Bemerkungen/Beschreibung
The article presents the results of seven years (1995-2001) of wader counts in theSeewinkel area. 15-18 counts per year were done in the Austrian and Hungarianpart of the Seewinkel. All relevant habitats (beside the lakes also meadows andagricultural fields) were controlled. Focus was also given to the age structure ofthose wader species where differentiation between adult and young birds is possiblein the field. Furthermore a special counting method (flushing) was used the first timein the area to count the snipe species (Gallinaginae) in the wet meadows duringpeak migration. The results are presented within species chapters which include notonly phenology and age structure, but also origin and winter quarter of the relevantsub-population. For the breeding species of the Seewinkel, also the number ofbreeding pairs and its historical development is given. The Seewinkel is part of theBlack Sea/Mediterranean Flyway and is an important inland stopover site within thisflyway. Beside the international important breeding population of Avocets, the significantroosting numbers of Temmincks Stint, Ruff, Common Snipe, Black-TailedGodwit, Spotted Redshank and Wood Sandpiper are of special importance. Beingan inland stopover site, also the numbers of Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper andDunlin are significant. The importance of the Seewinkel as stopover site is due to thediversity of habitats available for waders (salt lakes of different salt content andturbidity, wet meadows, grazed meadows, etc.). This diversity allows many differentspecies to find niches for feeding and therefore makes the area to an importantinland roosting site for most of the Black Sea/Mediterranean Flyway species.
